Update 12/11

All right. Film Festival didn't turn out as well as expected, but we did get $19.22, and we spread the word to at least three people outside of our club about what we're doing. Just trying to be optimistic.

I'm not going to let this slow us down; I want at least $500, no matter what.

I haven't got any people saying that they can come today, so I'll just be going it alone, I suppose. I'll go out either today or tomorrow door to door with the cookies, and I'll let you guys know how it goes. If anyone's schedule clears up, just let me know.

I want to do something for the "Join the Vigil" thing. (Check here for more info) I want to make a mural with lights and decorations and the names of the people who died in the LRA Christmas massacres. Let me know if you have anything to contribute. Hopefully, we can take a bit of time at the end of the meeting on Tuesday to do this. I'm emailing about permission right now.

Thanks, everyone. I know this is a busy time of year, but I appreciate everyone's effort.

Meeting 12/7/10

Hey, sorry this is late, everyone is busy at the moment, sooo I'm posting!

First thing's first, Film Festival is tomorrow! Hope you've all been spreading the word everywhere you can! Let's see, check list...
  • Microwave: covered
  • Popcorn and water from Costco: covered
  • Chaperon for the first shift: possib-lay? (comment please)
If you have any of these movies, please bring them...
  • Up
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Finding Nemo
  • Toy Story
  • Spiderman
  • Star Trek
  • Juno
  • Inception (?)
  • Bat Man
  • GI Joe
Moving on.

This Saturday is supposed to be the Tuba Fest, but there's an expected 1-3 inch downfall of rain coming up. So I have a question for you: how would you guys like to bake cookies, work on t-shirts and watch movies at my house instead? (Our house would be good for something like that, just not an end-of-the-semester-celebration party) That way, if we decide it's not too rainy to go out and fund-raise, we still can, but if it's too rainy, we're not in downtown Portland.
Let me know! IC Roadies sent me a caroling packet so we can always do that instead.

Checking about selling t-shirts and such at lunch tomorrow. Follow up comment to come...

What do you guys think about this? Should we "Join the Vigil"? I think it'd be a nice thing to do, if you don't mind last minute things. Let's plan this up quick!

The party next Friday will be at... Kendall/Alysia's house? Where are we on that?

Annnd, that's all I got. Thanks for reading guys!

cOmmENt!!!

READ THIS

Guys, someone by the name of Kail McGrath donated to Change for Change today. How much did he donate, do you ask?

One. Hundred. Dollars.

That's right.

If anyone knows who this person is, please let us know, because a HUUUGE thank you is in order!

And if you haven't seen the last blog yet, check it. I just felt like this was probably important enough to have an entire post for. Thanks guys!

Update 12/1

Hey everyone! I hope you've had a lovely World AIDS Day! Pretty awesome assembly today, right? ;D

Just wanted to let everyone know what's been happening in fundraising land...
  • We are turning in the building-use form, announcement request and fliers tomorrow to get approved for the film fest. We'll make a Facebook event and copies of the fliers over the weekend and come Monday, it's go time for advertising! P.S. What movies are we showing? Our time slot is 3:15-7 p.m.
  • Lock in is not happening. It was a wonderful idea, but things just didn't work out. Now you guys have an idea under your belt for next year. Hopefully, we can still do a celebration type thing, or one last fundraiser, or SOMETHING to celebrate a semester well-done.
  • Drum rooooll... Our shirts and beads came in the mail today! In case some of you don't know, we now have hand-crafted bead necklaces from Uganda to sell. And blank t-shirts that we will spray paint with stencils to make them look super awesome.
Speaking of which, if you are an awesome conceptual artist, we would really appreciate it if you wanted to come up with sketches of possible t-shirt designs. We have a general idea, but we'd love new ones/input.

We're selling t-shirts for $5 each, and necklaces for $12 each. I think what we'll do is we'll get permission to set up a table at some of the lunches next week to sell these things. Here's some pictures of the beads, just to give you an idea...

Short-length triple strand...

Medium-length single strand...

Long single strand...

Also! CLUB PICTURE will be NEXT MEETING! Be there, or you won't be in the yearbook with our club!

Don't forget to comment! Thanks guys!

Snow Day!

Hey guys! I hope you're all having a jolly day off! But now that we don't have a meeting today, we need to at least touch base and make sure that all our projects are where they should be.

IC Viewing: Make announcements in your classes! We won't have the time to put up posters, so spreading the word by telling people will be our best advertisement. Invite your friends to the FB event, as well. (http://tinyurl.com/27ooc2s) Don't forget whatever you signed up to bring!

Film Festival: Where are we with this? Master calendar request form is turned in, I hear. Any word if it's been approved? How about the time of the event? That will affect the movie(s) that we can chose. Speaking of that, do we have an idea about movies? Leave a comment with suggestions/what's been decided.

Lock in: So, things are looking glum at the moment, but we won't give up until absolutely necessary. People who have been contacting venues, has anyone had any luck? I'm gonna try to get a hold of a few I had in mind. Right now, that's our priority.

Human Rights Assembly: So in case you haven't heard, someone from leadership contacted us about having a presentation for the assembly! Awesome, right? Basically, we have 2-5 minutes to present who we are, what we do to help, and how people can get involved. They said a video would be fine if we want to do that, but three are already being shown. What are you thoughts? What would you like to see done in that assembly?

Change 4 Change: What we need now are jars for the actual collecting, and publicity. I'll work on a promotional video this weekend, and we've got the Facebook page set up, but what other ideas do people have? And who would like to find jars that would work?

1 in 3 editing: As far as I know, the extra interviews that we wanted to have happen have not happened. Come on, guys, I really need something to work with. At this point, we don't have enough footage to make a credible PSA. All I need is for the interviews to be set up. Please, any takers? Also, editing day is this Saturday! Anyone who can go, I am thinking from 1 to 4 p.m. Thoughts?

Some other things you may be interested in...
  • Fur Free Friday march this Friday! Check FB for more info... (http://tinyurl.com/2dhcuxp)
  • Tomorrow is the day we've been waiting for! Tomorrow Obama will release his plan for US involvement in Uganda! Hopefully everyone has signed the pledge to read his strategy... (http://www.theresolve.org/from-promise-to-peace)
  • IC is offering an easy fundraiser to earn more money for the competition. They are sending out beaded necklaces to sell! That combined with the t-shirts that we are ordering will hopefully pull in a bit more money. I've already placed an order for the beads, and the t-shirts will hopefully be on the way soon.

Thanks so much for all your hard work! This is probably one of the best years Do Something has had in quite a while, and it's all thanks to you.

Have a happy snow day!

Update 11/12

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday! Our total for the competition is now $70.81, which isn't bad at all, but we can still do a lot better! We got this, guys!

Here's a video filmed by a man named Joe Anybody who saw us downtown yesterday... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGzSefbbPu4

We put a great dent in our total, and we've got a lot of other activities coming up. So just be sure to stay on top of things! If your committee still had things that were undecided, try and come to the next meeting with more details so that final decisions can be made, and we can move forward.

Thank you so much for all of your effort! This has been a great year so far!

Update 11/7

Hey everyone!

A lot of discussion has been happening in the comments of the last post. Check it out if you'd like.

First of all, the plan for Tuesday is for everyone to get together at lunch and gather donations. We will also record our hair whipping contribution. So basically, please comment with what lunch you have so that we can plan everything out.

There has been brief talk about doing something in public, as in not at school. If you have any suggestions for this, please leave a comment. If we can plan this out over the blog, we might be able to get together this weekend on a day when people aren't busy. Let us know, please!

Some random notes:
-Comment if you're interested in helping out with editing the PSA for 1 in 3!
-Ideas for the Human Rights assembly? Keep 'em brewing in your pretty little heads, and bring them to the next meeting.
-Gather those pledges for the Walk-A-Thon!
-Got a Facebook? Like the THS Schools for Schools Competition Page!
http://tinyurl.com/23v92gm

Oh. Did we mention that we would love it if you COMMENTED?

Thanks!

meeting 11/2/10

Howdy Y'all!
Before I say anything else, remember to bring 1 friend to the meeting next week! and comment on the blog to say you read it!

Anyways... we talked A LOT about fund raising today but we also talked about 1 in 3. Thank you to Alysia and Tanner for volunteering to interview for our PSA. (make sure you have the facts by November 20th) Tanner will you be able to do it? If any of you know anyone who has been in an abusive relationship, ask them if they would be willing to be interviewed for our PSA also. (we can make it anonymous!) OH and Courtney was wondering if anyone wanted to help her edit for the video. I think it will be over Thanksgiving weekend... am I right?
The Human rights assembly would be a good time to show our PSA at. It is Wednesday December 1st so we have to ask the assembly organizers if it would be okay.

Bring 1 person to the meeting next week! we need more people because the more people we have is the less work for you and the more things we can get done!

OKAY! on Saturday November 20th is a walk-a-thon to raise money for our club. It goes from 8-10am at the track at THS. We got our pledges today during the meeting and if you didn't get one you should find one of the officers and get your copy from them. Try to get as many pledges as you can! If you are confused about how to fill it out *cough cough Charlee* :D ask another person if they get it. and make sure you have all of your pledges by the 20th!

TEXT 102402 to 73774! EVERYDAY!!!!!

Now for Schools-for-Schools: we came up with like 50 ideas so bear with me!
Does anyone have an idea for an easy fundraiser that we can use for a hair whipping video. all we have to do is earn money for schools-for-schools while flipping our hair and we make a video of it. the deadline is November 15th sooooo basically we need to do our video by next Tuesday... Try to come up with some good ideas, we might walk around at lunch and whip our hair or stand on the corner by the school and do it... what do you guys think?!?!?!

We like new people! bring a friend! and comment on the blog!

We are also going to do a change for change thing at school. basically each class has a jar and they get points for every coin they have but you can also put dollar bills in other classes to make their score go down. The winning class would get a free piece of pizza, (maybe Little Ceasars would donate?) all they have to do is bring their ID card and show it at lunch and they get a free piece of pizza! we were thinking about announcing this at an assembly and the deadline would be December 10th so we have time to count the money and figure out what class wins. The pizza party would be the 17th of December.

Comment on the blog and bring a friend!

We talked about the Quidditch tournament again. We were thinking about having 4 teams, 1 staff team and 3 Student teams. We would have a training day in late November (whenever the gym is open) and the actual tourney would be the second week of December. Emma is in charge of finding the days we can use the school! THANKYOU! ANNND all the money we get from the Quidditch would go to Schools for Schools also!

HEY :) http://www.refresheverything.com/search/?q=Tigard

What do you guys think of having a movie night at school? maybe in the lower rotunda we would charge $2 for admission and people could come and watch movies and hang out with their friends and wear PJ's. It would be on a Friday because what else are you going to do on Friday? certainly not homework! ;) If we do this we also need a building use form and movies we would like to watch. This would be on December 3rd and we could kick it off with our PSA because that is the deadline for it (National Talk Day.)

I wish i had more friends... *hint hint* :)

We also talked briefly about advertising in stores (you know the little coin donation boxes they have at registers) so if you would like to, go to some stores and ask the manager how you would go about putting coin boxes there to use.

write a comment, Bring a friend!

On the last day of Schools for Schools we want to have a venue(Church, school, or some kind of building) and have a lock in. We will have different activities in different rooms (guitar hero, twister, etc.) and we would just party all night long. It would be "like a carnival over night"! There would be a fee for entering into competitions. It would be on December 17th, which is also the money deadline and the last day before winter break. If you have any ideas comment or put in the suggestion jar... make sure you still comment though!!!

And If I haven't said it before, BRING A FRIEND!!!

Nov. 15th: hair whipping video is due
Nov. 20th: Walk/jog-a-thon
Nov. 20th: 1 in 3 interviews due
Thanksgiving weekend: edit PSA
Some time in Nov. Quidditch training day
December 1st: human rights assembly
Dec. 3rd:National Talk Day
Dec. 3rd: PSA deadline
Dec. 3rd: Movie night!!!
Dec. 10th: Deadline for change for change
Dec. 17th: Pizza party for winning class
Dec. 17th: Lock in

HALLOWEEN ROOMS

Hey guys! This is just a mini update.
Just letting you know Emma, Court, Annie and I (Quinn) stayed after the Invisible Children showing and talked for a little bit about Halloween rooms. We designed the room and decided where we want to put the pirates and stuff... did anyone volunteer to design the rocks for the mermaids? And Courtney also wanted to put up streamers and maybe even decorative lights (like christmas lights) just to make the room more interesting... and also try to put your things together before we get to the school on Sunday because ICC decided to cancel the setup on Saturday and so we need to be there by 1pm at the latest! we only have 2 hours to throw together a kick but Halloween room... And don't forget your COSTUMES!!!! YAY!

ps: I apologize if this blog post does not make sense... i am getting sick and haven't really been paying attention all day so if you have questions just comment and I will try to clarify when my head isn't as cluttered... :D bye!

Class Announcements for IC viewing

Here's something along the lines of what you should say:

"Hi! Next week on Tuesday after school from 3:15-4:30 is a showing of a documentary called Invisible Children. It is about the war that started in Uganda where children are taken from their homes and used as child soldiers. It is a very emotional and inspirational video and it is very good. The Do Something Club is hosting it and there will be free snacks! SO if you aren't doing anything you should go!"

Thats not the best but it gets the point across... and ask some of your teachers if you can just stand up there for a minute and tell people... don't forget to say there is food!

I would like you to notice if your name is not on that list (that includes officers) that means that you are not as cool as them... Make sure you have your information by the 2nd day of November in the year 2010... (November 2nd)

Schools for Schools is next on the agenda. Basically all we decided was that we need to think of fundraiser ideas. Sooooo... you should do that ;)

Meeting 10/12/10

Hey guys! How's it goin?

So first of all, we were talking about the Homecoming parade (our theme is Scooby Doo by the way) and this is what we have for characters:
Shaggy-Angus
Freddy-Alysia
Scooby-Charlee
Velma-Courtney
Daphne-Carmella
Ghost-Emma
Monsters-Grace
Candy throwers-Eli, Annie, Aly, Kendra
If you should be on this list and you are not... that is bad!!! post a comment and tell me what is wrong and I will repost corrections!
Try to dress up as a monster that you would see in Scooby Doo but if you can't think of anything, just wear something hippieish... (that's a word by the way) and if you don't own tyedye and there is no way for you to borrow any then come decked out in Tigard gear.
If you are not going to be on another float, make sure you are at Albertson's by 3pm (4 at the latest) on Friday. Oh and just in case you wanted to know, we are 27th on the list... that's how much they love us... :)

Set up for the parade is on Thursday at 3pm and we will meet in Bowman's room and gravitate towards the mystery machine (Alysia's van).
Everybody needs to bring a dollar this week to give to an officer and we will all buy candy for you to throw at-I mean to the children. :)

HALLOWEEN ROOMS!!!!!!
The Halloween rooms are on October 31st from 3-5pm. Setup is on that Saturday from 2-4pm
and then on the 31st from 1-3pm. Our theme is Peter Pan and we were planning on making clothes pin Fairies, a treasure chest, hats/wings, a fake sword fight (w/ fake swords), pixie stick pixie dust, and having the actual movie playing in the corner. Eli and I were also thinking of having Tinkerbells all over the room and if the kids find them all they get a prize... What do you think?

A few other things we talked about were the Invisible Children
showing in 2 weeks and Court is putting up posters all over the school. BRING A FRIEND!!!

We also talked about our 1 in 3 PSA. our deadline is December 3rd which is also "National it's time to talk Day". Comment if you would be able to find people to interview or just find info on teen dating abuse.

Coming up:
Schools for schools is a yes- we are planning it next meeting
Who wants to do a Tualatin River Cleanup???
Anyways... Here is what you should have gotten out of this:
  • Bring money
  • Courtney needs to put up fliers
  • Everyone needs to decide what you are going to be for the parade and comment
  • Will you be there for Halloween rooms and setup?
  • think of ideas for Halloween rooms
  • ... that's it?
if this post sucked I am sorry! this is my first time and it took me an hour so give me a break please :)

Meeting 10/5 Minutes

Hey guys!

We had our Meet and Eat last Tuesday, and we had such a lovely turn out and a great time! We really hope that those new members who came continue to throughout the year!

Homecoming Parade is next week! Our theme is Scooby Doo, so we need to decide who can come, and who's who. If you would like to be one of the members of the gang, CALL DIBS ON IT IN THE COMMENTS! Everyone else can decide at the meeting on Tuesday. If all the gang members get nabbed and we still have extra people, we'll probably have either monsters, or candy throwers. So be sure to choose who you'd like to be!

We will most likely have a set up day where we decorate lovely Ms. Alysia's van next Thursday after school. So if you can't be with us for the actual parade, you can still contribute! Please be there, if you can!

Keep theme ideas for Halloween Rooms in mind! There's an ICC meeting on Wednesday, so I need to know by then what our plan is. You can suggest ideas in the comments you know, to get the gears turning!

Also, the IC Spring Tour is soooo on! Check out this video!

The Rebels are Coming from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.

See you all next week!

T-Shirts Update

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let you know, that our T-SHIRTS CAME IN THE MAIL! Celebration!
Now we just need to figure out what to put on them. I'll be buying that special printing paper soon, so please bring ideas to the first meeting, which will be next Tuesday, September 14 at 3:15.

Don't forget, we're finishing up the club rush videos at that meeting! I'll have a script ready, so really all you have to do is say one line. Wear something you won't mind being caught on video in. ;]

Keep the SOLV Beach Clean Up in mind! It's coming up on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 10 am. We need transportation and a head count. Try to know by the next meeting! (at least if you can go)

Oh, also, thank so much for the quick responses last post! This year will be wonderful, especially if we can keep that up!
See you next week, and I hope your first day was awesome!

We're almost there...

Summer is almost over, and that means we're about to start another awesome year of Do Something shenanigans. Hopefully, this year will be the best yet. If that's gonna happen, we've got a lot to do.

For the sake of keeping this short, here are some bullet points...

-Meetings now start at 3:15! We still end at 4.
-No more CJ! We're changing it to a more welcoming suggestion jar.
-No poster board for Club Rush. Instead we're having a DVD with videos of our projects.
-I still need to film, so we'll do this at the first meeting, which is Tuesday, September 14 at 3:15.
-First meeting after Club Rush, we'll have a meet and greet. As soon as we know when Club Rush is, we'll plan this more thoroughly.
-We need to hook a lot of people at club rush! Hopefully, we want enough people to have committees. Some for projects, and a committee for fundraising. Let's make it happen!
-We're ordering bulk t-shirts soon, hopefully before Club Rush. I'll try getting a hold of you for your shirt size.
-Everyone will be getting a monthly calendar with events, meetings, etc. on it. There will be a hard copy in the DS box in Bowman's class. We'll also have a public calendar (possibly) in the window of Ms. Bowman's room.
-We're going to try and continue monthly pop can collecting throughout the school year.
-If you wanna know some of the projects we talked about, check out the sidebar. --->

ALSO! We are making contact sheets so that we can spread the word when a new blog is up. There's a bit of explaining to do about this, so we will talk about it at the meeting.

Thanks for sticking by, guys! See you at school!

Party!

The word is in, our party will be Saturday, August 28th starting at 3:00 pm at Alysia's house! We'll be making our visual for club rush, talking briefly about the upcoming year, and basically just hanging out with other awesome people. If you could bring a bag of chips, a soda, etc. just as a courtesy to Alysia and her beautiful mother for letting us use their house, that would be amazing.

Please RSVP and tell us what you're bringing (so that other people can know what isn't already being provided) in the comments.

Thank you, darlings!

Just an update...

Hello, everyone!

The Midsummer Party obviously was a no-go. But we're planning ahead for the end of the summer/ beginning of the year party. This one is planned to be at Alysia's house, and she's checking her calendar at the moment. A new post will be made to inform everyone of the date.

The officers had talked about getting together to plan for the upcoming year a while back, and it'd be a good idea to do this before the party, just because we'll all be there anyway and it needs to be done.

Also, I think it'd be a good idea (and a fun bonding activity) to prepare the Club Rush posterboard at the meeting. It's better to get that kind of stuff out of the way early on so we don't have to worry about it later.

If these sound like good ideas/if you have any feedback, comment please! And as always, hope you're having an amazing summer!

HEY!! Here's an idea...

Happy Summer days everyone! hope you're enjoying it!

Here is a question: for better communication and for the last min changes, who would prefer an email?

ex.) There is a date changed on the blog and not everyone check in time and missed out. But everyone checked their email the night before or the morning of the next day.
Let's say this same scenario, BUT an email was sent out and everyone got a message about the change before it was too late! :)

Here's my idea: for the beginning of the next school year (during club rush or first meeting) and we get a bunch of new members, so we get their emails as they sign up to be in Do Something. (And they get the website to the blog.)

After the meeting I'll post the events and things discussed during the meeting and send out emails with the dates we plan to do something. If, someone can't make it, or a last min change was made, or if new information was mentioned, an email would let people know.
**Speaking for me, I don't check the blog as often as I do email. An email would let me know of a change faster than if I have to check the blog all the time. sometimes, again speaking for me, nothing has changed on the blog so I don't check it for a while.

With two places to let someone know of a change, there isn't a way someone could miss it. :D

So, if you like the idea or have any thing you would like to add, comment!

Thanks :)

Summer Update

Hey guys!

I hope your summer has been fantastic so far, and I can't wait to see you all at Annie C's house for the Midsummer party. (Just a note, but we should start thinking about a date for that so that people can mark it on their calendars. Comment with your thoughts, please)

Just wanted to let you know that I got an email from an Invisible Children representative who heard about our viewing. I think we're going to try to work out an assembly at the school, and arranging for the roadies to stop by on their fall tour, one of whom would be a Ugandan high school student. Awesome, right? Really, last time I asked there weren't really specific responses. So if you have any on possible date ranges for the tour, possible conflicts, one month vs. another ideas, please comment.

If we'd like to have a sort of summer project, we can try to arrange the river clean up again. LEAVE THOUGHTS PLEASE.

Just a reminder about pop can pick ups, but be sure to keep up on those dates! This is really a time for your leadership skills to shine through! Take responsibility, contact people for rides, copies of flyers (Alysia is a great person to talk to about that, FYI...), help with passing out flyers/passing them out, etc. I'll post dates in the sidebar of the blog for easier access.

There should have been a can pick up this last weekend, and I know we've sort of been a bit lax this first week of summer. So if that didn't end up happening, let's make sure it does next time. I'll try to start sending out reminders at least a week ahead of time to help out.
If you need anything, feel free to call/text/FB message/comment/attack me in the middle of the night, kidnap, and interrogate me. Whatever floats your boat.

COMMENT. Cuz we love your opinions.

Happy summer!

5/25- No meeting, I guess

Hey guys.
Only three people were able to come today, which isn't exactly enough for what we had planned. So we're going to have to talk over the blog about what we would have talked about today.

First thing: for the river clean up idea that Aaron introduced, we have to decide on a date. Things to keep in mind: if we do this during summer, people might be off on vacations, so not everyone would be able to do it. In my opinion, we should do it sometime in these next few weeks, before we have to start stressing about finals, and before people start leaving on vacations. Please post your ideas in the comments!

Should we have a meeting on June 15, which is during the last week of school, or should our last actual meeting be June 8?

We need someone to type pop can flyers soon, so that Alysia (love you!) can make copies.

This is just a thought, but I think that we should arrange a few more interviews for the PSA. Alysia and I did the interview with the counselor from the School Based Health Center last week, and we got a lot of terrific information. (We can watch the footage at the next meeting) Be researching any mental health professionals or events that we can cover for more of this type of info.

The Invisible Children fall tour is already starting to be booked up. Basically what this entails is that a crew of roadies, as well as a Ugandan guest speaker, would come to our venue and show a video of our choice. If we wanted to arrange them to stop at our library viewing, (which is also just an idea. We talked about making the viewing the best we can, and I think this is an amazing opportunity) we have to start thinking about possible date ranges for the vieiwng. They've already booked into October, which is why it's important we start thinking now.

Okay, so things to comment about...
  1. When do you want to do the river clean up?
  2. June 15th meeting, yes or no?
  3. Who wants to make pop can flyers? :D
  4. Do your research on mental health professionals, and bring anything interesting to the next meeting.
  5. Do we want to put our viewing on the tour schedule for IC? If so, write down any ideas regarding the date in the comments.

Even if you don't comment on every matter, I think that if you don't comment at all, you're going to get a consequence. If you read this before someone else, just spread the word! Sorry it's such a long post, but this is what we got!

So, I'll see you all in a week!
