Meeting November 14th

Hello! This is what we discussed at the meeting yesterday:

We have decided that we wanted to do at least 2 volunteer ideas before winter break. The 2 ideas we decide on are:

  • Soup Kitchen (research to be found out by Jamie)
  • Giving Tree (research to be found out by Maddie)
The other volunteer ideas we decide on along with the people who volunteered to do research on it are:

  • C.A.S.A. (Cole)
  • S.O.L.V. (Vanessa)
  • Save the Music (Sammie)
  • Spread the Word to End the Word (Spencer)
  • Adopting a street and picking up trash from it (Grace)
  • Caring Closet (Emma)
  • Habitat for Humanities (Caylee)
We also decided that we were going to participate on the December 6th Holiday Mixer (which is during access time) (research being done by our advisor, aka the wonderful Bowman). Not much information has been given, but it has been confirmed that the G.S.A. (Gay Straight Alliance) and S.T.O.P. club will also participate.

An awareness we talked about yesterday was about palm oil. It is about (please correct me if I'm wrong):

  • Found in candy and food
  • Grown by the palm plants (not really sure)
  • Usually grown in tropical areas (such as the rainforest)
  • Grown on plantations that require random holes in the middle of the forest to be made
  • Curious (?) orangatans* try to go around the holes
  • No animal is known to eat the plant
  • Plantation owners think they are
  • The plantation owners shoot them and kill them
  • Population is going down
  • DON'T EAT FOODS WITH BAD PALM OIL.
We also mentioned about Invisible Children, but more information will come soon about that later. Have a great week and Thanksgiving school free week!

Meeting May 11th

So last meeting we started to talk about next year. So things we wanted to improve on was: getting on the daily bulletin, unite our thinking and club members, and commit to our projects.

COMMENT!

We also wanted to get Bowman back as our club supervisor, so we decided that next year club meetings would be held on Mondays instead.

COMMENT!!

Also as a way to get mor service projects done it was suggested to have goals for what we want to accomplish and be rewarded with positive feedback. Emma was talking about having diffent levels of deication to the group with different prizes. Also we were thinking about having jobs for the whole club, like researcher, etc... and those would rotate.

COMMENT!!

So next year , we decided to make Club rush the BOMB!!! We had suggested planning it out over the summer and having flyers and a video. Also to have a meeting relativly close to club rush.

COMMENT!!

We decided to have an end of the year party!!! We would make shirts, eat junk food and party it up! We do need a place to have this party, any suggestions??

COMMENT!!

We also wanted to remind people what this club was about. This is a club where you can help your passion. Emma's passion is poverty and homelessness. My passion is Spread the word to end the word. Maggie's passion is animal rights. If you have a passion please comment telling us what it is.

COMMENT!! And anonymous comments aren't showing up so please make an account!

Courtney also wants to go Rollerblading!!!! Comment if you want to go. We would go to Oaks Park.

We need to fund raise, so we came up with collecting bottles and cans. We are still donating money to Diabetes foundation but only $60. And we wanted to do one last project before the end of the school year, so we thought about doing the Tualatin river clean up with NHS. What do you think???

COMMENT!! COMMENT!! COMMENT!!

Meeting 4/19

Hey guys!

So first, we would like to know who is still interested in doing the river cleanup with NHS. If you would like to go please comment saying so.

Earth Day is this Friday and in order to celebrate the Earth the club Friends First wants to team up with us to do the Bull Mountain Meadows Forest Cleanup this Saturday from 10 am to 2pm. Comment if you would like to go and Courtney will give you more information.

So Resolve and 25 are teamed up with the 25 day of silence. If you can raise 25 dollars by the 25th you will be added to the list of Break the Silence which is where you watch a short film and then after break the silence and there will be a cooncert following. This is for people who participate in the 25 hours of silence. This is all in Downtown Portland for more info comment saying you want to participate.

A Bill was passed against the LRA kidnapping children but the bill still needs to be funded and we need to help and get Congress to fund otherwise all our hardwork will be wasted. Courtney is leading a Lobby meeting with Jeff Murkley about this and would love to have people come and show support.

Next Tuesday is our Spray Paint Party!! This is at Alysias house. Are we meeting before we go to your house? And where is it for people who have never been there before?

LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Meeting April 5, 2011

Hey guys!! So at the meeting today we talked about many things. First we talked about having an initiation for members that are going to stick around for the long run. Courtney came up with the idea of making new Do Something shirts and having the spray paint party as initiation and then watching a inspirational movie afterwards. We need to decide on date for this. Comment with suggestions. Prefferably a tuesday and if someone would be willing to hold it at their house that would be great. We wanted to make new t-shirts and need help coming up with a design for our club. Comment if you have an idea. Then we talked about selling t-shirts to help raise money for 25. We wanted to change the design and put 25's logo on the t-shirts. So for the Carnival we can't do darts or ballons because people have already signed up with those booths. We decided to do games from Minute To Win It. If everyone could look up some games and comment with a few favorites that would be awesome!! Also to help with 25 we wanted to do fundrasing called Bigger and Better. Basically you start with a paper clip and try to bargain with someone for something bigger and better. (haha get it!) Then we would sell the items we got for money to donate to 25. We were thinking of going around someones neighborhood. And guys don't forget the cure we found for world hunger at the meeting. For the paper cranes, we are having a meeting during both lunches on thursday in the library to work on making posters. Also Quinn metioned makking a giant crane so if you want to do that, that would be awesome. And last we talked about getting support from teachers for the Peace Out Rally. Basically lokking for people to supervise as well as back up our cause. If I forgot anything please comment and let me know. Other than that read and COMMENT!!!

Meeting March 29th

Hey guys! Sorry about the late blog post, I have been really busy. Anyways... Last time we had elections!!! Our new Sectetray is... Spencer (me)! Our new Vice President is ... Charlee! And last but not least our new President is .... Emma!!! We talked about the Diabetes Walk last time amd decided not to do it because it cost alot of money. Instead we were going to donate $100 to them. Also Splash 4 Cash is a no go as well. But we are still going to do the peace out rally. But the good news is that we want to set up a booth for our school carnival. The carnival is on Friday April 15th. We had a few ideas of ballon darts or poster darts. For the ballon darts we would need some big cork boards and thought of charging people $1 for 3 darts. For the poster darts we need to get a lot of posters. If anyone has another other ideas please comment!! Last blog Courtney posted a thing about making paper cranes for Japan. Do Something if giving Japan $2 for every paper crane that is made to help with the diaster. At the end they plan on making a mural with the paper cranes and sending it to Japan. We want to help and set up a table at lunch to have people make cranes. If you could comment to say if you could help that would be great. We also need a lot of paper, so if everyone could bring in printer paper or origami paper that would be awesome! We also thought about having a banner for people to sign saying they have made paper crane. That's all we talked about this week. Please comment with suggestions for the carnival or just saying you read the blog!!!!! -Thanks a bunch, Spencer

Meeting 3/15/11 was cancled

Sorry to the people that wanted to go to the meeting today. There weren't very many people comming and there wasn't a ton to talk about but there is enough for a blog. Please COMMENT ON THIS BLOG! This is really really important! And I will text you a ton!!!!

Head count needed ASAP! The Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary is this Saturday and I need to know who is going! My mom and Alysia can drive and we can get my dad if needed but I need to know by Thursday at the latest! For sure we will all meet at THS at 7:50-8:00am and will leave at 8:00. Depending on which car fills up first Alysia's van is $4 and mine is $3. Bring $4 just in case you can't get into the cheeper car. If you are going you need to bring these things.
  • Bring rubber boots or boots that you can get really muddy
  • Gloves
  • A vegatarian lunch in respect for the animals
  • Cut apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc to feed the animals with
  • Gas money
  • Water bottle!

If for some reason you can't bring a veggie lunch tell me and we'll cover you. Meat will not be eated there and if you bring it and we don't have extras you're eating in a car... Also if you can't bring animal treats we'll bring extras.

Head count for Beach Clean Up is need too!

Since it is sprin we are having elections! Today was supposed to be the day that we had nominations so leave your nominations in the comments. You can nominate yourself or someone else and voting will be next meeting so BE THERE!

The Diabeties Walk is comming up and we need to know what's going on with the disease... 3 people need to sign up to do research on symptems and effects it has on peoples lives. Also look up things like how close we are to a cure... 3 people!!!

Last but not least. Things have been horrible in Japan and many lives have been lost. Courtney proposed the idea of making a mamorial for them like we did for the LRA. I know that it would be after Spring Break and it might not be as relavent but I think that things will still be bad and our support and or prayers/happy thoughts will be needed. She wanted to make paper cranes so if you can and really want to help please make some over the break even if you don't know how look it up. THANK YOU AND COMMENT!!!!

meeting 3/8

Sorry for the late post... it's been a busy week...
For the beach cleanup we are going to Lincoln City and it is from 10am-1pm.
And we are doing a Ralley open for anyone in Tigard-Tualitin we want to sell things... We were thinking of selling glow sticks, face paint, food (people who knw how to run concessions), showing a movie, and selling shirts and bracelets also. What do you think of doing a variety show? Get your friends together-Tigerettes, Choir, Theatre, and Band people!!! money is good!
We also talked about the Diabetes walk through Cook Park. It is open to anyone who wants to join and instead of paying to join we will get pledges for how far we walk and make sure you get the money to Alysia!!! We are going t make a facebook group and T-shirts and also a video about it to show to classes... Courtney was going to talk to Katelyn Yarnell correct? I can't remember sorry...
Comment on the blog
Make sure you sign up for T.W.L.O.H.A street team if you aven't already and make sure you have done some events!
Saturday after the Tigerettes do "Night of Dance" or whatever it is called the thespians are doing a movie showing of Inception. $5 donation suggested. It is in the Auditorium.
We also thought about doing "25". It is something to raise money and awareness for Invisible children and the war in Uganda. Get $25 by April 25th and on that day you are supposed to be quiet for 25 hours(it's hard but we can do it!!!) Raising awareness is good so we need to make a Facebook page, tell your friends, walk around with a jar and ask for money (works really well) and ask people to sponsor us for every hour we are quiet.

and Don't forget to ask parents if they can drive to the Lighthouse farm sanctuary on the 19th!!!

An idea...

Hey guys.

Not quite sure where the blog from this Tuesday is... but in light of recent events, I thought I would bring up a thought with you guys.

I'm sure you've heard of the tsunami-inducing earthquake that has now destroyed many parts of Japan. There have been reports of a suspected leak at the nuclear plant, and the death toll is estimated to be over 1,000.

Do Something sent out an email this morning, with the idea of making paper cranes for Japan. The cranes symbolize hope for the Japanese people and it's quite a touching motion. There's a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/papercranesforjapan) where we can post pictures of the cranes we've made.

I was wondering if you want me to try and get in contact with people over the weekend so that by lunch on Monday, we can have a table set up with a crane-making station and donation jars? Would you be interested/think it's a good idea/be willing to man the table/teach people how to make cranes?

Thanks!

-Court

We have a show Friday and Saturday at 7, and a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday. (weather permitting) It's $7 for students at the door, which is a pretty good deal for such a fantastic play!

Meeting 2/15

Hola, mi amigos.

Judging from the notes, it looks like today was a super productive meeting! Thanks, guys! You rock!

The hunt for an adviser is still on. At this point, we have Alysia asking Croft and Peters, Spencer asking Cable and Montgomery, and Kendall asking English.
By the way, does anyone know if the cards we made a while back ever got to Mrs. Bowman? Just wondering...

At the next meeting, we're having a sort of meet and eat for the new members! Signed up, we have Eli bringing soda, Alysia bringing candy, Annie bringing chips, Kendall bringing cups, and Clara bringing cookies. Thanks to those who volunteered!

Signed up for the Carter Creek tree planting set for Sat. 2/19 (9-12 p.m. at 5800 Meadows Rd., Lake Oswego) are Emma, Spencer, and Allie. Eli, Clara, Grace and Lin (?) are maybe's. Please comment if you are going! Carpooling arrangements need to be made. And don't forget to bring $1 for gas money! Sign up online at this link...

We'll hold nominations for the new officer positions at the March 15 meeting. Be looking out for people displaying leadership skills who would be good to nominate! We'll have a final election on March 29, at which the nominees will need to have time for a short speech.

If you are going to the Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary on Sat. 3/19, please let us know by March 10! We need a head count. Don't forget to plan on bringing $3 for gas money.

As far as the status on all of our other projects goes, please check the last blog post, so I don't have to rewrite the same old news.

Thank you, guys! You are all lovely souls!

Meeting 2/8

Hey guys!

Sorry for the late post, there was a bit of miscommunication going on...

This was a bit of a "let's-catch-up-on-everything-that's-going-on" meeting, so here are some things that are (hopefully) happening in the near future.
  • Tues. Feb 15- Club Rush; be at the school by 7:15 please! If you have a DS shirt, please wear it!
  • Sat. Mar 19- Lighthouse Farm Animal Sanctuary; from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. We'll get a confirmed head count and figure out rides as the date gets closer, but try to keep this day open!
  • Sat. March 26- SOLV Beach Clean Up; from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. Not sure which beach yet, but if people have input, be sure to keep us updated!
  • Sat. Apr 16- Diabetes Walk; still working this one through...
  • We're also working on... Splash 4 Cash, IC Spring Tour, Peace Out Rally, volunteering with Our Peaceful Place, and TWLOHA (twloha.fancorps.com)
This weekend was our trip to the Real LIFE Exhibit, and I gotta say, those of us who went were really inspired. We picked up about 50 billion brochures to share on Tuesday, so if those who weren't able to go are feeling the need to go later on, we will arrange another day.

We need a new adviser, so several people went out asking teachers, and the only one who said yes (that I'm aware of; if I'm wrong, please let me know) was Montgomery. (thank you, Spencer!) So we may be switching homes for a while! I'll talk to Montgomery for sure tomorrow, and if that goes well, then plan on meeting in her room. (Upper language hall)

Also, be aware that elections are coming up! Thanks guys!

-Courtney

Meeting January, 11th, 2011. 1.11.11 <--- Cool huh? :D

Anyways, hello!
First and for most, if you are reading this, THANK YOU! And major kudos to you! Reading the blog is a very good thing. ^-^  And alsooo... THANK YOU Quinn, and Emma, and Courtney, and who ever else I'm forgetting that has ever posted a blog. It's a lot harder than it looks, and I'm complaining after only one time, so imagine how they feel! Sorrrrry, I'm rambling. Anyway thanksss!!
Love,
Charlee

Kay so here's the real blog post... What we talked about today are as follows :
  • Splash for Cash
  • Diabetes Walk
  • Additional Volunteering like... The Soup Kitchen, Portland Rescue Mission, GSA/ARC Partnership
For Splash for Cash, we brainstormed a list of teachers that might just be interested in letting students throw paint at them! Yay for them! Here's our list, and the people who are supposed to contact them to see if they'll actually do it (:  :
  • Wilson, McKee & Hummel- Quinn
  • Carlisle, Caro, & Hermanson- Courtney
  • Rutschman, & Savage- Annie/ Eli
  • Smith, & Jarman- Eli
  • Kitchen- Emma
  • Dehaan- Clara
  • Bowman- Already approved!  :D
And I just got a thought... Maybe, we should send the teachers that follow through with this some type of thank you thing? I think that'd be nice... Anyway, just in case you forgot,  Splash for Cash's profits go towards Our Peaceful Place! HOORAY! :)  We were thinking of using the parking lot instead of the gym. Possibly, depending on if lame people would email Courtney back. But if people continue to not cooperate, we'll just have to wing it and hope its not raining! The possible date we came up with is WEDNESDAY, MAY 18th, 2011. After school.

All we really discussed for the Diabetes Walk is when we want to have it. But hey, did you know that we live in Oregon and it rains a lot? I didn't! Noo, just playing. But seriously, it would not be fun to go in the rain. Although it's fun to fund raise, it is not fun to do it miserably. So we're crossing our fingers for SATURDAY, APRIL 16th, 2011. Let us know how that works for you(:

So we talked about a few other things we could do for just some additional volunteering. The Soup Kitchen was mentioned... And I guess we should contact Aimee Bolton for information ? I dunno.. We didn't get much on that...
We talked about volunteering at the Portland Rescue Mission! Good for us! (:
Also, we should try and partner with GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) and ARC (Animal Rights Club) so we can get some club to club support! We'll join GSA's Day of Silence, or possibly, Day of NOISE! I'm looking forward to that (: We'll meet up with ARC and go to the Humane Society and have fun petting animals and shtuff (: Who wouldn't mind petting animal strangers for 3 hours? I know I wouldn't. (:

And that's pretty much all I got, so, if you have any questions, what should you do? You should comment.
And if I missed anything, I'm so terribly sorry!!

OH, and don't forget to text 102402 to 73774  EVERY DAY to support our lovely THS band (:
Thanks, lovelies!
Over and Out, haha,
Charlee <3

Meeting 1/4/10

YoYoYo!!!

so today we talked about all of the upcoming events and things we want to do. but first of all................suspense................. we raised $373.06 for Change for Change. WOOHOO!!! good job you guys! That's really awesome and we should do even better next year. Here are the things we talked about:
  • SOLV Beach Cleanup
  • Animal Rights Club
  • Club Rush 2
  • To write love on her arms
  • Increase your green
  • Diabetes Association of America
  • Our Peaceful Place
  • Invisible Children
The SOLV beach cleanup is on Saturday March 19th in Seaside and it starts at 10 am and goes until 1pm. We normally go cleanup for a while and when we get hungry we go to somewhere to eat. See if you can go and let us know!

Animal Rights Club is having a visit to the humane society sometime soon and if you want to go the next meeting is next Tuesday morning during access time in Bowman's room. You should go and see if there is room for you to go. It's really fun!!!

Club Rush 2 is on Tuesday February 15th. It will be in the morning like the last one was. Do we want to make a new updated video again???

To Write Love On Her Arms is another thing we talked about. Raising awareness for depression is basically what it's about. They have a street team thing where you sign up and they have missions and when you complete a mission you get points towards their online store and you can get free stuff :D everyone likes free stuff! here is the adress for you to go sign up: http://towriteloveonherarms.fancorps.com/ Sign up and we will set apart 15 minutes or so to work during meetings so if you sign up now you can work at the meetings.

The Increase Your Green is a project that Do Something has started. It is basically a competition to see what school can reduce their carbon footprint the most. We kind of decided not to do it but if you are really into it bring it up again and we will see.

We want to help raise money and awareness for Diabetes Association of America also so we were thinking a walk-a-thon. You will pay an amount of money to join it and if you want a shirt you could pay extra. We are planning to go through cook park and having a picnic? It will be when it isn't raining as often... but we are in Oregon so who knows

Our Peaceful Place is an organization that gives food and necessities to homeless people. Right now they don't have a place so they are more of a "state of mind". We want to raise a lot of money for OPP so we came up with a lot of ideas. Can food drives, selling bracelets(Alysia can teach), getting sponsors to double what we raise, and a "splash for cash". We will have a raffle for kids to pay a dollar and if they win they get to throw paint balls at teachers who are willing to get paint balls thrown at them. :D I enjoy this idea. We have to see when the gym is open so we can do it and we need tarps... think about it. Next meeting we will search for some teachers that are willing to do it.

Invisible Children was thought to be taking over so this semester we want to focus on other projects and have IC on the side. Soooooo... think of some ways to raise awareness but it's not our main topic anymore.

Comment on the blog and say you read it, and text 102402 to 73774 to support our THS Band!!! $50,000 could be ours and all you have to do is vote... it's easy!

~Quinn :D
